A Thrilling Ride For Metalheads
Destroyers of All, the progressive thrash/death metal powerhouse from Coimbra, Portugal, is gearing up for the release of their highly anticipated third album, In Darkness We Remain. Slated to drop on March 1, 2025, this album promises to be a whirlwind of aggression, technical brilliance, and melodic sophistication—elements that have come to define the band’s identity since their formation in 2011.
For fans of Revocation, Pantera, and Death, this record is a must-listen. Spanning ten tracks and clocking in at just over 42 minutes, In Darkness We Remain is both a homage to their roots and a leap forward in their evolution. It’s a meticulously recorded album that retains the raw energy of thrash and death metal while embracing progressive elements that push the boundaries of the genre. Mixed and mastered at Golden Jack Studios by João Dourado, the production is top-notch, giving each instrument a space to shine while maintaining that intensity we all crave.
As someone who lived through the underground metal explosion of the '80s and early '90s in the U.S., I can confidently say this album captures that same visceral energy and excitement. "Neurosis" weaves beautiful and forlorn melodies into the chaos, with moments of introspection that contrast with total riff madness. "Gehenna" showcases electrifying guitar work. The rhythm section deserves special praise, with classically deep and punchy basslines, anchoring everything with precision. And then there are the vocals—João Mateus channels a raw intensity that’s almost reminiscent of Max Cavalera, delivering an emotional punch that elevates every track.
Destroyers of All’s history speaks volumes about their commitment to their craft. From their debut EP Into the Fire to their critically acclaimed LPs Bleak Fragments and The Vile Manifesto, the band has consistently pushed the envelope. They’ve also made their mark on stages across Portugal and Spain, sharing the spotlight with legends like Crowbar, Destruction, and Soulfly. Now, with In Darkness We Remain, they’re ready to take their sound to a global audience.
As we await the album’s release, I had the chance to ask the band a few questions:
You’ve mentioned pushing progressiveness and aggression of the first two LPs—how do these elements come through on the new album?
We tried our best to enhance the relationship between our progressive approach to aggressive music. We did it in a more refined way, where we believe it is better composed making it more engaging to listen to.
Are there any unique techniques you explored during the production of the album?
We used some rather unusual percussion instruments in songs like "Cold" to help set the mood and obtain the ritualistic tribal atmosphere we were looking for, as well as trying different ways of instrument recording, microphone blends and such.
After a period without live shows, what’s it like to be preparing for the stage again?
The pandemic killed the live shows industry. After finishing all the work in "In Darkness We Remain", it sure felt good to be focused again on rehearsing, playing the new songs and perfecting their performance while knowing that the anticipated shows are coming. Being on stage is what we love the most!
In Darkness We Remain is shaping up to be one of the most exciting metal releases of the year. Be sure to mark your calendars for March 1st and prepare for an album that’s as technically impressive as it is emotionally gripping. Whether you’re a long-time fan or new to Destroyers of All, this is one record you won’t want to miss.
