A Melodic Death Metal Discovery

The Italian metal scene continues to evolve, and Hexabrot stands as a prime example of the genre’s ever-expanding horizons. Formed in Turin in 2023, the band quickly solidified their lineup, bringing together a diverse set of musical influences. Their debut EP, The Order of Things, showcases a striking blend of melodic death metal, progressive elements, and cinematic soundscapes, drawing inspiration from bands like Dark Tranquillity, In Flames, and even composers such as John Carpenter and Goblin.
A Concept That Emerged Organically
At its core, The Order of Things explores the tension between human nature and the “natural order.” Interestingly, the overarching theme wasn’t premeditated but instead emerged as the songs took shape. “It’s our first time writing lyrics, so it’s natural that the first thing we react to is the world around us,” the band explains. “We translated this into lyrics dealing with history, but also mythology and relationships.” This organic approach results in a thematic range that spans from biblical rebellion to historical mutiny and personal conflict.
The Sound – A Fusion of Ferocity and Melody
The EP’s five tracks create a dynamic listening experience, seamlessly shifting between aggression and introspection. Adamstown sets the stage with a driving, melodic energy that underscores the historic tale of the Bounty Mutiny. Sunken Codes pulls listeners into a haunting underwater realm, drawing inspiration from both the legend of Atlantis and the dystopian world of Bioshock.
Opal Light is a standout track, not only for its gripping subject matter—a strained mother-son relationship—but also for its vocal dynamics. The inclusion of guest vocalist Giulia Rabozzi adds a haunting contrast to Nicola Miceli’s anguished growls. “Our bassist Gael proposed using a feminine voice to add a beautiful contrast in terms of voice colors,” the band notes. “It made perfect sense given the song’s theme.” The result is a deeply emotional piece that highlights Hexabrot’s ability to blend brutality with elegance.
Closing the EP is Eita, a powerful and venomous track that encapsulates humanity’s struggle with hatred. The band sought an additional layer of aggression and found the perfect fit in guest vocalist Edoardo Trauzzi. “Our guitarist Paolo found him in the Internet’s most hidden nooks,” they reveal. “With Eita, our intent was to add another layer of anger, power… and hate! Edo was just a perfect fit for it.” The track leaves an unforgettable final impression, cementing the EP’s themes of defiance and chaos.
Hexabrot Live – Adapting to the Stage
Beyond the studio, Hexabrot has been sharpening their live presence, gearing up to take the Northern Italian metal scene by storm. While opportunities remain scarce, they’re making the most of every performance, adjusting their setlists to fit the crowd. “One of the things we realized while working on a live show is that our tracks are so varied and versatile that we can tweak the setlist according to the environment,” the band explains. Whether performing at a death metal festival or a progressive metal night, they tailor their music to resonate with each audience.
What’s Next for Hexabrot?
With The Order of Things set to drop on March 7, Hexabrot is already looking ahead. “We’re basically done writing our first full-length album,” they confirm. “We hope to start recording it this year. It’s going to be a long process, but a more familiar one after having done the EP in just under a year.” If The Order of Things is any indication, their future full-length will be an ambitious and immersive experience.
Final Thoughts
Hexabrot’s debut EP is an impressive first offering, displaying both technical prowess and emotional depth. Their ability to weave together progressive elements, cinematic influences, and raw aggression results in a truly unique sound. With a full-length album on the horizon, the band is poised to make a significant mark on the metal world.
