Bulgarian death/groove metal outfit GRIMAZE has unleashed its latest; "The Heart of a Collapsing Star," marking their third release since their formation in 2013. Released on September 1st through KMK Records, this album stands as a testament to the band's evolution in the extreme metal scene.
The new album explores the relationship between microcosm and macrocosm, with powerful human emotions being experienced through fierce natural forces to depict the intensity of the spiritual path. From the very first track, the album establishes its relentless character, diving headfirst into a maelstrom of brutal, uncompromising metal. Delving into the Darkness: A Chat with GRIMAZE
Over the years, you've toured with legendary bands like Cannibal Corpse and Vader. What's the most unexpected thing you've learned about your own music while sharing stages with these death metal titans?
What I remember hearing from those bands regarding our music was: "Guys, it is all great but shorten the parts without vocals a little bit". Nothing more unexpected. Touring with bands is a great and intense experience. Everything works like a well oiled machine that runs full force all the time. Everybody is part of this and the energy and discipline that goes along with all this feels great.
You chose to record drums in Stockholm with Daniel Bergstrand while doing other instruments in Sofia. What drew you to split the recording process between Bulgaria and Sweden, and how did this geographical division influence the final sound?
Since Grimaze is based in Bulgaria where we have our own recording studio it just made sense to do the recording that way. It was also sort of spontaneous. One day we just said: "Ok, this album is ready to go, let's record the guitars next month and then we will sort the rest". We needed to find a great mixing and mastering engineer and an even greater drummer. But it all fell into place. Janne and Daniel helped us achieve a very polished sound that still kept our rawness. It was our first time working with them and we could not be more happy with the results.
This album is SO hard and so fast... and the lyrics are amazing. Who's writing the words?
All the lyrics in Grimaze are written by our guitar player Melina. Her affinity to explore the human consciousness in depth allows her to manifest words that enrich the musical accompaniment and create a vast and cohesive landscape.
Since their formation in 2013, GRIMAZE has built an impressive touring resume, sharing stages with death metal legends including Decapitated, Hatesphere, Thy Disease, Pestilence, Bleeding Gods, Vader, and Cannibal Corpse. "The Heart of a Collapsing Star" was mixed by Daniel Bergstrand, and mastered by Lawrence Mackrory at Rorysound Studios.
