Cursed Chords: Grim Colossus Takes the “Descent”

Descent Into Madness, a new seven-track EP from Grim Colossus will release June 21. The album is unmistakably inspired by influential classic acts like Candlemass and Solitude Aeturnus. Written and produced by Magnus Berglind, Grim Colossus achieves a storytelling adventure following the journey of a man who, after a personal deep dive into the occult, becomes haunted by evil atrocities and nightmares. Grim Colossus grows a little more into its identity with every release. Through Descent Into Madness, the funereal Dreamworld starts off the decline towards Insomnolence, which picks up a little more speed. Here, we establish the takeoff for a well-produced record.

The album’s centerpiece Into the Tomb is a plunge into sheer cosmic horror. Over a crushing riff-cycle, the lyrics recount a man’s ill-fated discovery of an ancient, forgotten sepulcher that turns out to be a gateway into forbidden dimensions of evil. Harsh, tormented vocals and eerie atmospheric tones evoke the otherworldly dread as demonic entities from the fabled Necronomicon are unleashed upon the hapless protagonist.

Here, he “Descends Into Madness”. The EP is the ages-long tale of good and evil, other worlds, and forbidden knowledge that’s piqued man’s curiosity for an eternity. This one-man stoner/doom metal project from Hönö/Gothenburg, Sweden, successfully pulls you into a vortex of doom, gloom and sonic heaviness.

Grim Colossus puts its own spin on the time-honored elements of doom, with each composition pushing itself into a malevolent, harder subterranean sound. Descent Into Madness is clearly born to summon very dark demons of the Nordic underground. Haunting laments close out the album, the man’s sanity in ruin and his soul forever damned for peering into the abyss of his own nightmarish landslide with Paradise.
