UMG and Roland Release “Principles For Music Creation With AI”

The evolving world of digital music and AI generation has had both positives and negatives we’ve seen so far. Universal Music Group and Roland have joined in their efforts to create a standard for transparency to counteract those negatives. It’s called the Principles for Music Creation with AI.

Contrary to the growing idea that major labels simply reject AI contributions to music creation, an increasing number of companies including labels have become supporters of the Principles for Music Creation with AI, embracing the technology. Some of these organizations include NAMM, Virgin Music Group, the MIDI Association, and Music Hackspace. The collective belief is that a compromise can be reached that still allows for AI music generation with increased transparency and partnerships that explore the willingness to pay for copyrighted music use.

Their core principles are clearly listed and explained, including the idea that human-created works must be respected and protected, and that transparency is essential to responsible and trustworthy use of AI. Many audio software companies are also teaming up with the guidelines, including Focusrite, LANDR, Eventide, and Beatport.

To encourage widespread adoption in the music industry, Roland, Universal, and other groups strongly urge additional organizations around the world, including manufacturers, educators, associations, and labels, to openly endorse these Principles. Alignment among music industry leaders has enormous potential, and it is critical to create a responsible future for AI in music creation.
